Smudged Gradient Map effect
Tutorial
This is the before image of the tutorial.
This is the 'after' image of the tutorial.
Steps to Complete
1. Choose Select > Subject. This command automatically detects the main subject in a photo and creates a selection of it.
2. Create a new layer group and add a new layer mask.
Applying a layer mask to a layer group makes it possible to control multiple layers with one mask.
3. Create a new adjustment layer and set it to black and white.
4. Select 'new adjustment layer again and choose Gradient Map.
5. Click in the Gradient Preview to open the Gradient Editor.
A Gradient Map assigns color to corresponding brightness values. Colors on the left of the gradient are mapped to darker tones, and colors on the right are mapped to the highlights.
6. Open the blend menu and choose Hard Light. This is found in the Layers panel under the tab that says 'Normal'.
7. Set the opacity to about 90% to reduce the intensity of the effect.
8. Select the Brush tool and paint with black over the bright highlight areas to mask the Gradient Map effect on that part of the subject.
Ex. Select Layer > New > Layer Via Copy to duplicate the Gradient Map adjustment layer. This is if you have a second subject that you would like to make changes to. Repeat the previous steps starting from #3.
